Playing Live To Loops & Stems

Carl at a session with kit & electronic gear

Every drummer must be comfortable playing with clicks, loops, & recorded tracks (*called “stems”) Here’s a live concert where I had to do that very thing. *We are playing live by the way; this is not “lip-syncing.”  http://event.cbn.com/roshhashanah/?eventID=143097

  1. A magnificient video, Carl! Your work was excellent. In one of your videos, you seem to be practicing with a Tama Rhythmwatch. Do you use that for performance, too?

    • Hey Tom, Thanks for the note… I normally use a Yamaha Clickstation, but the Tama Rh.Wa. is great too… Or a small drum machine… Yes., I always use a click in live as well as studio settings. “Groove Is Everything!” Peace, Carl

  2. Yep, most of the events I play for are done with clicks; drum loops; stems(supplement tracks); etc. AND ALWAYS when doing a recording. It’s a rare moment anymore when we just play without a time reference. Even when being “spontaneous” I will use a metronome and start to “tap tempo” the pace of the leader… and then start that click at the designated mark. // BUT, it’s always important to keep the everything flowing & feeling musical. *There are moments when a leader/artist wants the time to shift a little… I’ll always watch & listen carefully. I always say, “It’s better to be together than to be right.” Don’t fight the time feel when you’re with the band. Blessings on your groove, Carl
