The Worship Drum Book — Available NOW! — With DVD clips!

The Worship Drum Book has been out for  several years. It has been an encouragement to many drummers!  Thank you all for your prayers, support, & encouragement during this process. This was one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever undertaken.

I’ve studied and taught drum & percussion lessons for years. More recently I’ve been doing seminars & masterclasses, and less private teaching… although I’m starting to do that again too. *You can contact me at this site. – Contact Info.  I love to teach and to mentor. This book will definitely be part of the required reading for all of my students. 🙂

There are tons of great books and videos on the subject of drumming, so I know I didn’t really want to spend time covering a lot of the material that is already available. There is some technical information in this book: exercises to work through; patterns to learn; there’s even a DVD of me demonstrating some of the concepts in the book… But really the focus became more about what happens in the world of modern worship. Dealing with bad acoustic environments; learning how to serve better; and embracing your divine calling as a musician became bigger issues than the mechanics of drumming.

I pray this book is inspiring to, not only drummers, but all musicians who are trying figure out why God has called them into the world of modern worship. It is available in your local bookstore and on line.  **NOTICE – Be aware if you buy a USED copy the DVD could be missing or damaged. ALWAYS CONFIRM condition with the seller.**  https://www.amazon.com/Worship-Drum-Book-Concepts-Excellence

*MY FIRST REVIEW* — “The Worship Drum Book” meets the needs of not only drummers interested in playing contemporary Christian music in the church, but it also has a wealth of information for any drummer wishing to play better. … The chapters addressing the choice of drums, cymbals, tuning drums, getting a great sound from the kit, & using either grip are valuable to all drummers…” – Dr. Thomas Romine

  1. Congrats on the new book bro! I am ordering a copy so I can blog about it! Looking forward to it.

    • Hey Jon, That’s great. Feel free to give me some feedback on the book. I pray it’s a blessings… but I love to keep learning… Let me know how it reads. Peace, Carl

  2. John Caminiti says

Hi Carl, I’ve been trying to get you on the list of drummers in Drummerworld . I was at a worship seminar a while back and saw you play . Your a great player and should be on that list . So I’m going to keep trying . Go bless John

    • Hi John, WOW… thanks so much. It would be an honor. Whatever the Lord can give favor to… I’m OK with that. 🙂 We’re all on His list. Blessings, Carl

  3. Carl,

I’m a 59 year old “new drummer” who is trying to realize a life long dream of drumming. My goal is to be in a band that plays danceable classic rock and 60s and 70s Top 40.

That being said, I’m sure my first gig in front of people will be in a church worship service. Please tell me why worship drumming is different, or is that all in the book. I’m in Oregon right now away from my normal Florida church, which does have a band, and want to be ready for when I return.

    Thank you, Randy

    • Hi Randy, I think it’s great your diving into drumming to have some fun… and to worship the Lord. // Technically, there’s no difference in playing any kind of music as compared to playing in church. 1. You have to learn the songs properly.. know the arrangements. 2. You have to keep good solid time. 3. Keep an eye on the leader & the rest of the band to keep it feeling good together 4. Don’t play too loudly for the venue or for the balance on stage. /// The biggest difference in worship music is that we’re focusing our emotional energy or attention on the Lord; pouring out our gift of music to bless Him & to draw people into that experience along with you. // In both settings you are always serving the people & Yes,the Lord too. Even when playing secular music you should stay humble; honor the people you work with; and be a blessing to those who have come to hear you. **Even David (before he was King of Israel) was called to play for King Saul to help him feel better when he was tormented. Anyway… I think the book could be helpful. I always encourage musicians to stay on a journey of 1. technical growth (music practice) & 2. spiritual growth (the bible; prayer; community; & other studies about worship). I bless you on your journey too. Stay in touch; let me know how it goes. Peace & Blessings, Carl

      • Carl,

Thank you for your quick and thoughtful reply. This journey will be an interesting one and full of growth for me…especially in my walk with God.

The hardest part for me will be to find joy playing the songs. I’ve struggled with most worship services because so much of the music and lyrics are repetitive to the point I lose interest (says a lot about me doesn’t it). 🙂 As my main interest in Christian music is much more energetic and loud (Skillet, Fireflight, Disciple, We As Human, Red, Nine Lashes, Plumb, etc.) I know I will need to learn a lot before I’m ready. On one hand it’s a road I don’t want to travel, but one I know I’m supposed to take.

I will keep in touch. Randy

        • Live by the code: “Give EVERY song it’s honor.” This helps me to remember what my purpose is… Sure, some music may be more inspiring or challenging… BUT, I have just resolved to make everything I play sound AWESOME.. 🙂 as if it’s the greatest song ever. I don’t judge; I just “bring it to life.” … anyway… you got the idea. Now go have a good time. Blessings, Carl

          • Thank you again for taking the time to answer, you must be very busy. Not only will I Give Every Song it’s Honor, I will Adapt or Die!

  4. Gud day Carl, im one of your follower by watching and listening to all the drum parts that you played years ago in all integrity hossana music. To Ron Kennoly, Alvin Slaughter, Bob Fitts, Paul Wilbur and many more.
Im very blessed and inspired in your playing. I hope someday you will visit again here in the philippines! And having a drum clinic.. 🙂
    God bless you more! 🙂

    In christ,
    Vlad:-)

  5. Carl,

Well, it happened. I found an ad on Craigslist for a church in need of a worship drummer. After praying and meeting with the worship leader, I overcame my fear of playing in public and made my drumming debut on May 4th. The journey has begun and I’m having lots of fun. Just thought you would like to know.

    Randy

  6. Thanks Carl this is a Nigerian Church drummer since 1987 till date it’s a privilege to meet you online as one of the Worship Drummers worshiping Christ Jesus I thought you would come down to Nigeria with Don Moen in 2012 when he came to Ibadan City way back then. Surely by His grace I will see you someday.

  7. Carl,

Had a chance to be in your workshop this past Saturday; I’m the one who asked about dynamics with an electronic drum set. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us.

I’m a bit late with this news, but if you look above, in January of 2014 we have a dialogue. I mentioned in January I anticipated starting my drum life in church and it happened in May 2014. It’s been scary, but fulfilling.

    The journey continues…

  8. Hello Carl I am Ernest from Ghana and I am young boy at 16 years and am a dummer as well and please where can I get a copy of your book and the DVD as well please..??

  9. Brandon Lloyd says

Hi Carl, i’m Brandon Lloyd, i have a question that I would like to ask you how can i get back on the drums & play again for my church even though I’m still a musician.

    • Hey Brandon, If you’re just starting on the drums I would get a teacher to walk you through the fundamentals of setup, tuning, and basic rudiments with a metronome to develop control. Then dive into the list of modern worship favorites and songs you know you’ll have to play for your church. Blessings as you study and prepare. Peace, Carl

  10. Hey,
If you could, I would like to know what music the book has.
    Thanks!

    • Hey David, The book is mostly about issues and concepts that church drummers deal with in the modern worship world. There are a few technical exercises and some musical references, but it’s not really a typical drum method book. Standard snare studies like the Roy Burns book would be good; also the classics… for jazz – “Advanced Techniques for The Modern Drummer” // basic rock – “Realistic Rock” by Carmine Appice // more advnaced — “Advanced Funk” by Rick Latham. I use these books in teaching the “mechanics” to drummers. My book focuses more on the heart issues. Blessings, Carl

  11. Hi Carl,
May I know are your 7 basic drum grooves printed on the Worship Drum Book?
    Thanks Christina

    • HI Christina. So sorry for the extremely late reply. The team has been working on other projects and we’re not keeping up with this website as much. I’ll check to see if we still have the files of those grooves. Blessings, Carl & team.
